Golden Son Book

Usually book twos in a trilogy are slower with a lot of setup for the conclusion. However, Golden Son isn’t your ordinary follow-up. Pierce Brown is magic because he knows how to keep the stakes high and plot points moving at a rapid pace.

I’ll say that I didn’t enjoy quite as much as the first book, but I’m still fully engrossed and itching to finish. The stakes are higher and it’s instead of dealing with a hunger games like entrance exam, he’s dealing with gold politics and maneuvers. At the time of this review (sick week continues) I’ve already started book 3.

There’s a lot to like. There is a good amount of characters and they’re all nuanced and memorable. Sure there are those that feel like loyal lapdogs to help support Darrow, but he still earned that trust. I can’t help but root for him myself after everything he’s been through. I also found myself suspending my belief a few times at how convenient things worked out, but it’s fantasy after all.

The twists are all great. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump before this series reinvigorated me and I’m better for it. That ending… I was shook. It left me with many questions. How did the jackal know? How did he catch Fitchner aka Ares? What will happen to Darrow? Excited to find out.
