Yemex – Bakehouse & Specialty Coffee

If you’re thinking of visiting and need a simple yes or no then my response would simply be… Ye-mex!

Yemex is a Yemini-Mexican fusion that boasts a plethora of pastries and coffee options you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in Houston. It’s pretty close to the Katy border, but at least there’s plenty of parking once you get there.

The inside is lined with two seater tables, so if you’re with a group you’ll most likely have a bit of space in between each other.

We asked for rec’s and I ended up going with one of the crazier options named the Areekano. It’s a double espresso poured over chilled water and then topped with a date cold foam, cheddar cheese, honey, and black sesame seeds. I’ve never had cheese in my coffee before and the barista offered to put it on the side, but I said give me the whole experience.

The drink came out to be extremely light and refreshing. Let’s start with the cheese. It actually wasn’t as prevalent as you’d think and when I’d get a little piece it’d provide more of a texture than flavor. I still don’t know if it’s necessary per-se, but I enjoyed the idea. The date foam added creaminess while still keeping the sweetness level surprisingly low. A great summer coffee.

Of course I also tried some of the pastries. I ordered a maple chorizo pinwheel and zatar croissant:

Spoiler alert – these were both banging. Starting with the pinwheel, they do not skimp out on the chorizo filling. All the way to the last bite, I always had a bit of it included. The maple is prevalent and feels like it’s ingrained in the bread. It was a great combo and up has to be up there with my favorite pastries of Houston.

Secondly, the croissant. It was flavorful af and could be best described as a spiced up everything bagel. There was even cream cheese in the middle. They do not shortchange you here as that zatar blend is lathered up.
